Roche lighthouse was one of the watchtower which was built by King Felipe II in XVII century to protect the Spanish coast of pirates from Berber. In the strait of Gibraltar, the duke of Medina Sidonia, owner of the tuna fishing, reinforced the system of watchfulness. He built Roche tower which has square plant. It was built between 1500 and 1599. In coastal defense Conil has Roche tower, Atalaya tower (dissapeared) and Castilnovo tower. After Spanish war of Independence it was abandoned. In 1986 it was restored by public construction and urban planning department and it was made into a lighthouse. Here there is one of the most beautiful viewpoint in this área and an excelent place to bird and marine species (red tuna and killer whale) watching.
