Route through the historic centre

General information

Centro Cultural Santa Catalina II
The route starts at the Puerta de la Villa and ends on the banks of the Salado River next to the Casa de la juventud

The historic quarter of Conil offers a series of unique enclaves of great cultural value. This route immerses us, at many points, in the history of centuries ago, when the town's economy depended on the tuna traps and tuna fishing. The Baluarte and the Puerta de la Villa are visible remnants of the old wall that safeguarded Conil.

In the monumental area, around the Plaza de Santa Catalina, we find the origin of Conil. First and foremost is the Torre de Guzmán, the old keep of the castle which was the nucleus around which the town of Conil began to grow. The current Santa Catalina Cultural Centre was the original Mudejar church in the 15th century. In this area we can also find the 15th-16th century Casa Cárcel, which was the first town hall and one of the first buildings in Conil; the 16th century hermitage of Jesús Nazareno. And finally we find La Chanca, from the middle of the 16th century, an old industrial factory dedicated to the capture and commercialisation of tuna by means of the almadraba fishing. Within this small urban space we can see the three pillars on which the life of the society of the time was based: military, economic and religious.

It is also essential to visit the Church of Santa Catalina, home to the town's patron saint, the Virgen de las Virtudes, and its square next to the Town Hall; the Raíces Conileñas Museum, the Art Market, The new Fountain and Laundries, The Old Fountain, the Chapel of Espíritu Santo, the windmill, the Ducak Inn, and a large number of enclaves that keep the history of Conil in their nooks and crannies. This route also allows you to enjoy the courtyards of the Andalusian village, passing through the fishermen's quarter. Places where the flowers that adorn the white walls create a unique contrasting effect.
