Church of the Misericordia

General information

Iglesia De La Misericordia
A large Baroque building constructed between 1775-1779 and commissioned by Sebastián Sánchez Franco, Count of the Cinco Torres

A large baroque building constructed between 1775-1779 which is undoubtedly the only surviving example of a charitable institution in Conil. It was commissioned by Sebastián Sánchez Franco, Count of Las Cinco Torres, a wealthy merchant from the Indies, to house thirty poor families.

The building is made up of a central chapel - practically square - and two adjoining courtyards where thirty rooms, the toilets, the communal kitchen, the housekeeper's quarters and the chaplain's quarters are located. The materials used are typical of the area: oyster stone and the white colour of the lime, which have ensured that it has been preserved in perfect condition.

In the chapel, the sculpture of the Virgen de la Misericordia, a carving from the end of the 18th century in polychrome wood belonging to the Sevillian school and a crucified Christ made of ivory and of Philippine origin, stand out. In the sacristy there is a magnificent canvas depicting "The Flight into Egypt", a work of the Andalusian Baroque school of the 17th century.

In 1946, part of the building was ceded to the College of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Nowadays, it belongs to the church and serves as the headquarters of Cáritas Parroquial.
