Puerco Tower

General information

Torre Del Puerco
It served as a watchtower for traps and seines, and the remains of a small "chanca" can be found nearby

The Torre del Puerco, also known as the "Cabeza del Puerco tower", forms part of the system of coastal watchtowers, present along most of the Spanish coastline, which Philip II ordered to be built in the area in the 16th century. In this way, the Spanish coasts were safe from Barbary pirates. This system extended from Gibraltar to Ayamonte.

This building, located between the municipal boundaries of Conil and Chiclana, dates from the 16th century and was already built in 1577.

In 1811 it witnessed the Battle of Chiclana, between Anglo-Spanish and French troops during the War of Independence.

More recently, in the 19th century, it was used as a watchtower for traps and seines, and the remains of a small chanca can be found nearby.
